Authors note: I am rating this movie as a Friday the 13th / slasher film. My opinion of this film in no way, shape or form reflects my opinions on real horror films. Maybe I’ll have something more to say about that another day.
First of all, this film has the best opening of all of the previous Friday the 13th films and any of the more recent slasher flicks. It deserves a round of applause. Platinum Dunes brought us this piece of cinema, and for those of you that are not aware these are the guys that brought us the reboot of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the remade Amityville Horror and the upcoming 2010 release of Nightmare On Elm Street. They bring rehashing to the level of a new art form!
Allow me to ask you loyal BTTP brothers in arms something…
What’s scarier then a big machete wielding, hockey mask wearing dude slowly walking after you?
The answer: a big machete wielding, hockey mask wearing dude sprinting after you. Looks like Jason has been training in the off-season!
This film takes Jason back to his intimidating, disfigured human self. Gone are the days of scrawny skeleton Jason from Part VI. No longer shall we be forced to endure Uber Jason from Jason X (thank God, Allah, Buddha, etc. for that). The film for the most part has all of the classic F13 elements. You still have unbelievably over the top and gore filled deaths. You still have the unrelenting nudity (there is one scene that borders on straight up pornography. Hello Skinemax!) You have more camp than you can shake a severed head at. The only thing missing is the multiple slayings of the films aggressor. Thankfully the one thing that wasn’t preserved was Jason surviving a series of outlandish attacks only to get back up and keep the blood a comin’.
All in all this is by far one of the better F13 films. It had everything a F13 film should have and it didn’t make me feel dirty and cheap while watching it.
My Rating: 4 out of 5 severed heads
